Let's Talk! Continues Discussion of Being a Welcoming Community Amid Backdrop of Civil Unrest

In July, we’re inviting the community to continue a discussion begun at February’s Let’s Talk!, where participants examined ways in which Sisters Country may or may not be welcoming. The conversation will address this issue in light of race-focused protests and civil unrest that have made headlines for more than a month.

Plans are to host this July 20 Let’s Talk! via Zoom video-conferencing. Community members with diverse perspectives are invited to join us for a robust but respectful facilitated conversation.

We'll hear about factors that might contribute to perceptions of how welcoming Oregon and Sisters Country is. The discussion—set for 6-7:30 p.m.—also will ask questions like:

• Given state- and national-level events, how are we experiencing this moment of time we’re in?
• How is this impacting us—as individuals and as a community?
• What might we do—as a community and as individuals—to help ensure Sisters is welcoming and safe for everyone and to help ensure that potentially combative issues don’t divide us?

Citizens4Community, a non-partisan and non-political organization, is helping to implement the Sisters Country Vision Action Plan. The plan consists of 20 strategies, which are supported by dozens of actions in four focus areas—“Prosperous Sisters,” “Livable Sisters,” “Resilient Sisters” and “Connected Sisters.” The strategies in the action plan were voted on and prioritized by the community during the Sisters Country Visioning process.

“Connected Sisters” Strategy #4 emphasizes bringing “less frequently heard voices into a diverse and welcoming community conversation,” “fostering tolerance” and helping all area residents “feel valued and supported.” The strategy aligns well with C4C’s community-building mission; so the Vision Implementation Team has asked C4C to help lead the strategy.

C4C has been hosting Let’s Talk! online for the past few months; and we look forward to a time when we can all sit down in the same room again. Until then, we encourage you—whether you’re a longtime Let’s Talk! participant or a newcomer—to join us, invite a friend, and share your thoughts.
