Let's Watch: Join or Die!

  • The Belfry 302 E Main Ave Sisters, OR, 97759 United States (map)

A film about why you should join a club...and why the fate of America depends on it.

C4C is excited to present a special community screening of Join or Die, an award-winning documentary inspired by the work of social scientist Robert Putnam. Building off findings from Putnam’s landmark book Bowling Alone, the film explores the decline of civic participation in America – and makes a compelling case that joining a club may be one of the most important things we can do to strengthen democracy and heal our crisis of connection.

Hosted at The Belfry, doors will open at 6:00 PM. Be sure to come early for a live virtual Q&A with the film’s directors, Pete and Rebecca Davis, at 6:30! The screening will run from 7:00 to 8:30 PM.

Before and after the film, attendees are also invited to participate in some “civic speed dating.” Local nonprofits, clubs, and volunteer groups will be on hand to share ways you can get involved locally.

Whether you’re looking to find your people, discover ways to give back to Sisters Country, or simply hear a hopeful vision for rebuilding community life, this promises to be an inspiring evening!

This event is FREE, but seating is limited. We strongly encourage you to register in advance!

About the Film

Join or Die is a film about why you should join a club — and why the fate of America depends on it. In this feature documentary from Pete and Rebecca Davis, follow the half-century story of America's civic unraveling through the journey of legendary social scientist Robert Putnam, whose groundbreaking "Bowling Alone" research into America's decades-long decline in community connections could hold the answers to our democracy's present crisis.

Flanked by influential fans and scholars – from Hillary Clinton, Pete Buttigieg, and Surgeon General Vivek Murthy to Eddie Glaude Jr., Raj Chetty, and Priya Parker – as well as inspiring groups building community in neighborhoods across the country, join Bob as he explores three urgent civic questions:

  • What makes democracy work?

  • Why is American democracy in crisis?

  • And, most importantly...What can we do about it?
