About the Artists

Nicole Penoncello

“The common thread in my work is place and human connection. I am curious about how we develop a sense of place and a sense of identity connected to places. I am also interested in how we visually represent places versus how we sense and experience them as we move through them in person.

I am continuously drawn to the aesthetics of cartography and employ similar bold color and geometric shapes in my work. Combining satellite imagery and topographic maps of places with tracings of tiny details discovered while walking on-site, I play with the hierarchy of information in order to question what’s most significant. I create drawings, paintings, objects, fiber art and installations that aim to convey the multi-sensory experience of moving through a place.”

Nicole grew up in rural Connecticut before moving to the Pacific Northwest in 2007. She earned a BFA in Sculpture at James Madison University, and an MFA in Contemporary Art Practice at Portland State University. Nicole has exhibited her work nationally, including recent exhibitions at the Forsberg Art Gallery at Lower Columbia College and the Mt. Hood Community College Fine Art Gallery. She currently lives in Bend and teaches Visual Arts at Sisters Elementary School.

Heidi Brickhouse

Heidi is a beadwork artist deeply inspired by the natural world – landscapes, flora, fauna, and celestial forms that evoke a sense of wonder. Her artwork is handwoven with needle and thread using Miyoki Delica beads, chosen for their precision and color spectrum.

She approaches her composition like a painter with a palette, intentionally layering hues to create detailed, realistic motifs. To give her beadwork dimension and structure, she also designs and fabricates custom brass frames that introduce a sculptural quality. Each piece reflects her dedication to color, pattern, and the challenge of creating realism through beading.
