Citizens4Community invites Sisters Country to ring in the new year with a robust, Let’s Talk! panel discussion 6-7:30 p.m. Monday, Jan. 18.
This Let’s Talk! will explore the idea of “social capital” and how it relates to the health and welfare of communities, especially rural communities like Sisters.
[“Social capital" simply refers to how well (or not) people who live or work together create networks and form relationships that enable their community to function effectively.]
Diverse perspectives are welcome as we discuss ways Sisters Country does (or can) come together to identify and pursue common goals, despite any differences that could divide the community.
We’ll consider such things as:
• What role can entities like the City, local organizations and local media play in bridging divides and building civic engagement (even amid times punctuated by strong disagreement and COVID stressors).
• Is the current state of trust among residents in Sisters Country at healthy levels or not?
• What assets of our community (e.g., public spaces, clubs, media, etc.) have historically promoted relationships and cooperative efforts; and how could these and other assets be used to further enhance cooperation (and build greater social capital)?
• What barriers exist to building greater trust, relationships and effective collaboration in Sisters?
Mitchell Luftig, a psychologist and regular columnist for the Nugget News, will facilitate/moderate the session. And panelists will provide local insight and help kick-start conversation.
Panelists are set to include:
Nugget News Editor Jim Cornelius
Sisters City Manager Cory Misley
Retired Judge Paul Lipscomb
Assistant Community Engagement & Program Coordinator for the City, Emme Shoup
